Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
