The UK and US have signed a significant trade agreement that will keep no levies on UK medicine exports being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to raise funding on medicines through the public health system. This commitment secures that duties on these vital exports will remain at nothing for a timeframe of 36 months.

This deal follows recent warnings to significantly raise duties on branded drug imports, with figures discussed up to 100%.

"This arrangement between the Britain bolsters the global environment for innovative medicines and introduces long-overdue fairness to U.S.–U.K. medicine commerce," a release said.

Economic Significance

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the UK's largest export categories to the America, which is by far the largest destination for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data show that in the 12 months leading up to last September, the UK exported pharmaceutical products totaling billions to the US. This amount made up a significant portion of British export trade in that span.

"This deal safeguards employment, boosts investment and paves the way for the UK to become a international leader for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Specific British Pledges

The pact involves several key pledges from the British government:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it deems new treatments to be prohibitively costly by 25%.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to double overall health service expenditure on treatments from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the coming ten years.
  • Rebate Cap: The sum pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to control costs will be restricted at 15%. Last year, repayments topped twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

This agreement comes amid a ongoing dispute between the drug companies and the ministers over spending levels and approval rates.

The disagreement were heightened by assertions that US consumers were paying several times more for the same drugs than patients in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several significant pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while major funding commitments have been pledged toward American operations.

One official publicly accepted that the NHS had to increase expenditure on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its total funding over the past decade.
